After my last movie review of “Red
Eye” went terribly wrong I left the theater soured by the
whole movie going experience. Movies just aren’t what they
used to be and going to movies isn’t the event it used to
be. Talking, cell phones still going off, babies at R rated movies,
the magic was gone.
But, being the eternal optimist that I am,
I refused to let myself believe this. I was determined to go see
a good movie. After much searching I found one, Murderball.
I saw this movie and let me tell you, it
was the funniest movie I have seen all year. Funny from beginning
to end, well written, well directed, perfectly cast, it was the
perfect comedy, just an all around feel good comedy that renewed
my faith in movies once again.
Murderball is the story about quadriplegics
who, here’s the kicker, play full-contact rugby (and they
say Hollywood has run out of ideas). It’s like “Dodgeball”
if Ben Stiller was retarded…ok bad example. It’s an
idea so far fetched, it’s hilarious. People who can’t
use parts of their bodies playing a full contact sport, the jokes
practically write themselves.
It stars Mark Zupan, the good guy who’s
been crippled by life (and a drunk driver) and goes on some hysterical
rants, and Joe Soares, the witty bad guy who you want to hate, but
he’s just so damn charming…plus, he’s in a wheelchair.
And a whole cast of character, each funnier to watch then the next.
An absolutely must see if you need a laugh after a tough day. But,
wait a few weeks for the crowds to die down before you see this,
because I was getting the nastiest looks and it was during some
of the funniest scenes too. I don’t want to ruin it for you,
but all I’m going to say is Mark tries to get back into his
wheelchair…tries, my sides hurt after that one.
So, thank you, Murderball, thank you for
restoring my faith that good, funny movies are still out there,
you just have to look a little harder and if your still craving
a fix for another comedy, The Constant Garden came out last weekend,
it’s supposed to make you sick with laughter.
On a scale of a scale from 1 to 100, I’d
give it 100, as in 100% chance I’m going to Hell… express
lane. |
