They really don’t make films like they used to. In the mid to late 1970’s a genre of film existed that really spoke to a generation holding deep moral values, socially conservative viewpoints and adhered to strictly wholesome “family” friendly content.
This of course wasn’t the cute Italian Horror sub genre of cannibal movies including Dr. Butcher MD aka Zombie Holocaust (1980) , and Cannibal Holocaust (notice a theme here?).
In horror movies we know the classic sub genres and their basic set ups; the slasher films (Friday the 13th) The Zombie Movie (Dawn of the Dead) and the ‘Kids get lost in the middle of nowhere and are killed by a family of lunatics movie” (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Wolf Creek.) What is awesome about the cannibal movies is that they are all the same: a curious expedition team always starts out in New York City and ends up on some tropical Island where they are eaten by cannibals. Dr. Butcher MD is no exception. This time a bizarre string of cannibal murders in the Big Apple are linked to a tribe on a small remote island. A team is put together to get to the core of the cannibals. This of course includes a hot blonde bimbo who has lots of random nudity scenes in-between the blood drenched gut ripping death scenes. When the team gets to the island they discover that not only are their cannibals which quickly devour a few of their crew in some really, really awesome eye squishing, heart eating, tongue puncturing ways, but zombies as well! So this film manages to cram zombies and cannibals together! That’s fucking brilliant, they really don’t make ‘em like that anymore. On a side note I always thought it would be cool to have a movie with both aliens and ghosts. Almost like Alien Vs. Predator but Predator is a ghost. Like who would win? Or like if you believe in ghosts do you also believe in aliens? I always thought the existence of ghosts was more believable.
Anyway back to Dr. Butcher MD. -This implies that he has a medical degree. Where did he get his degree from? What are his credentials? Apparently he went to crazy school cause in the end the surviving members of the expedition find out that it is in fact Dr. Butcher who is CREATING the zombies by taking living brains and implanting them into the corpses of the cannibals and the cannibals victims.. Awesome
